Italy and Lombardy strategic business partners for East side countries

Invest in Lombardy – Promos and the law firm Gianni, Origoni, Grippo, Cappelli & Partners ( on June 15 organized the “East Side Internationalization” conference in Milan. Seven have been the target countries discussed, for both outbound (from Italy to those countries) and inbound (from those countries to Italy) investments: China, India, Iran, Russia, South Korea, Turkey and United Arab Emirates.

The exchange between Lombardy and these countries is worth around 31 billion Euros per year which is equal to one-seventh of the overall regional foreign trade.  According to data, during 2015 there was a 5,1% increase in the Lombardy area in the exchange from the ‘East Side’ which is 2% higher than the Lombardy average with the rest of the world and 3,8% higher than the Italian exchange with the same countries.

These figures show import-export and investments relevance of values in business exchanges between Eastside countries and Lombardy region, in very diversified sectors: among others, in particular, high-tech machineries, chemicals, automotive, aerospace, electronics, fashion and design, real estate.

The strategic importance of this “East side of the world business” for Lombardy and Italy relies on the consolidated ongoing relations and stable business practices among our region – country and these markets.

  • Mahindra & Mahindra Ltd (a listed India-based company engaged in the manufacture, distribution, and sale of tractors, multi-utility vehicles, light commercial vehicles, and three wheelers) and Tech Mahindra Limited (a listed India-based provider of information technology solutions) acquired a majority stake of Pininfarina S.p.A. (a listed Italy-based company that offers design, engineering and manufacturing of vehicles) from Pincar Srl (an Italy-based investment holding company having interest in companies engaged in designing, engineering and manufacturing of vehicles);
  • Titagarh Wagons Limited (TWL) (a listed India-based company engaged in the business of manufacturing railway wagons, bailey bridges, heavy earth moving and mining equipment) and Adler Plastics S.p.A. (an Italy-based company engaged in manufacturing vehicle interiors for automotive industry) won an auction to acquire Firema Transporti S.p.A. (an Italy-based company engaged in design, manufacture, maintenance and refurbishment of rolling stock for railways) for an undisclosed consideration.


  • Modern Avenue Group Co., Ltd. (the listed China-based apparel and fashion brand agents) has agreed to acquire Excelsior Milano, the Italy-based company engaged in the operation of fashion-buyer shops, from Gruppo Coin Spa.
  • A consortium led by China National Chemical Corporation (“ChemChina”), a state-owned chemical products producer in China, has acquired a majority stake of Pirelli & C. S.p.A. an Italy based and listed tire maker.
